Class Action Reform in Australia: Keynote address by Justice John Dixon of the Supreme Court of Victoria

Class action litigation is embedded in the Australian legal system yet is set to undergo reform as a result of both the Victorian and Australian Law Reform Commissions’ respective inquiries into class actions and litigation funding.

We have convened a panel of experts to discuss their views on how the reforms are likely to affect plaintiffs, defendants and the legal profession.

The Hon Justice John R Dixon

Judge in Charge of the Major Torts List - Supreme Court of Victoria

Hugh McLernon

Executive Director - IMF Bentham

Lisa Nichols QC

Senior Counsel - Victorian Bar

Tim Finney

Director - Phi, Finney McDonald

Topics include

Contingency fees

Who dares wins? Or are there losers? Will the introduction of contingency fees lead to more class actions?

Multiple class actions

Death by a thousand cuts? How do multiple class actions affect plaintiffs and defendants? Will proposed reforms lessen the burden for defendants?

Victorian and Federal class action regimes

Do they serve different plaintiffs and different purposes? Will the proposed reforms change this dynamic?

His Honour Justice Dixon will deliver a key note address on reforms proposed by the Victorian Law Reform Commission, followed by questions and answers to the panel moderated by Corrs partners Daniel Marquet and Matthew Critchley.

Ensure that you are aware of how the proposed reforms are likely to affect your organisation's exposure to class action risk and to join in a discussion of the key issues arising from the proposed reforms.

Who should attend?
General counsel, litigation decision makers or other members of your legal team, risk advisors, litigation funders, insurers, experts and other practitioners. Please feel free to extend the invitation to those within your organisation who will find the event of interest.

Kind regards,

The Corrs Melbourne Class Actions Team
